Every task and every decision at work shares the same purpose: ensuring every Harita employee returns home safely at the end of the day. Across Harita Nickel's operations—where heavy equipment, high-voltage electrical installations, and hazardous chemicals are part of daily activities—safety cannot rely on caution alone. It requires a consistent set of standards that everyone understands and applies.
To achieve this, Harita Nickel continues to strengthen its safety culture by implementing systems that help control risks associated with high-risk work. One of these is the Critical Safety Compliance Protocol (CSCP) or Cara Selamat Capai Produksi&nbsp;(How to Achieve Production Safely), a safety framework developed by the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) team to establish a consistent approach to critical risk management across all business units.
According to Harita Nickel Vice President of OHS &amp; Management System, Supriyanto Suwarno, CSCP was developed to help prevent fatal incidents through a standardized and systematic approach.
"CSCP was developed to help prevent fatal incidents across all work activities. Through this framework, the principal hazards across our operations—from mining to processing—are mapped into a single, standardised safety framework," he said.
At its core, CSCP is built around six key elements that serve as the fundamental requirements before, during, and after high-risk work is carried out.
<ul>
<li dir="ltr" aria-level="1">
Competency: Ensuring every worker has the required competence, training, and certification for the task being performed.
</li>
<li dir="ltr" aria-level="1">
Documentation: Verifying that work procedures, permits, and supporting documentation are complete and approved before work begins.
</li>
<li dir="ltr" aria-level="1">
Risk Control: Ensuring critical risk controls are effectively implemented, including Lock Out Tag Out (LOTO) procedures and safety reviews.
</li>
<li dir="ltr" aria-level="1">
Equipment: Confirming that all equipment is fit for purpose, safe to operate, and routinely inspected and maintained.
</li>
<li dir="ltr" aria-level="1">
Critical Aspects: Ensuring all critical factors that could affect people, the environment, or surrounding communities have been identified and appropriately controlled.
</li>
<li dir="ltr" aria-level="1">
Management Review: Evaluating the effectiveness of safety controls through regular management review and continuous improvement.
</li>
</ul>
These six elements are applied across 13 Fatality Intervention Elements, which represent the highest-risk work activities within Harita Nickel's operations. They cover a broad range of critical tasks, including heavy equipment operation, electrical work, chemical handling, and work involving hazardous gases and molten metal.
Through CSCP, Harita Nickel aims to ensure that safety is more than a corporate commitment—it becomes a consistent operational standard applied across every work area. The framework also positions every Harita employee as an active participant in the company's safety management system, empowering them not only to comply with procedures but also to identify hazards, control risks, and help protect themselves and those around them.
"Since 2025, we have been rolling out CSCP across all business units. Through this framework, we encourage every Harita employee to understand the risks in their work area, comply with established safety procedures, and have the confidence to stop work whenever conditions are considered unsafe," Supriyanto concluded.
Know the risks. Control the hazards. Stop the job if it isn't safe.
&nbsp;
<hr>
Starting from August 2026, the Bentala Halmahera newsletter will feature a dedicated series exploring each of the 13 Fatality Intervention Elements within the CSCP framework. Stay tuned to every edition to learn how every Harita employee plays an essential role in protecting themselves, their colleagues, and the wider operational environment.

CSCP: Harita's Way for Safety in High-Risk Work Areas

Along the coastline of Soligi Village on Obi Island, coastal erosion has become an increasing concern for local communities. To help strengthen the village's natural coastal defences, students from Universitas Gadjah Mada's (UGM) Community Service Programme (KKN) joined forces with Harita Nickel, the Soligi Village Government, the Tongke Community, and local school students to plant 380 mangrove seedlings in commemoration of the International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem.
For the people of Soligi, mangroves are far more than coastal vegetation. They act as a natural buffer against erosion, provide habitat for marine and coastal biodiversity, and help sustain the livelihoods of communities that depend on healthy coastal ecosystems.
Soligi is home to approximately 23 hectares of mangrove forest, parts of which have been degraded over the years due to the harvesting of mangrove roots for firewood. Restoring these ecosystems has therefore become an important step in rebuilding the coastline's ecological functions while improving its resilience to erosion.
<figure class="image"><img src="https://api.tbpnickel.com/storage/images/blobid0_19.jpg" width="1000" height="667">
<figcaption>A joint mangrove planting initiative carried out by the government, UGM Community Service Program (KKN UGM) students, and Harita Nickel.</figcaption>
</figure>
The initiative originated from research conducted by UGM's KKN team before their deployment to Obi Island. Based on their findings, the students identified mangrove rehabilitation as one of the most relevant and practical ways to address Soligi's coastal challenges.
Shofwah Nur Aziza, a Forestry student at UGM, said the team's field research shaped the programme's focus.
"Before coming to Obi Island, we studied Soligi's coastal conditions and recognised the need for practical measures to reduce erosion risks. Mangrove planting became our way of contributing to the protection of both the coastline and the local community," she said.
The rehabilitation effort also builds on work already underway within the community. The Tongke Community has established and manages a local mangrove nursery, where all seedlings used in the programme were propagated and nurtured by local residents. As a result, the restoration process began well before planting day and will continue through long-term maintenance and monitoring.
Planting the seedlings, however, is only the first step. The long-term success of mangrove rehabilitation depends on whether the young trees survive, mature, and eventually develop into healthy coastal ecosystems. Regular monitoring and replacement planting where necessary are therefore integral parts of the programme.
<figure class="image"><img src="https://api.tbpnickel.com/storage/images/blobid1_15.jpg" width="1000" height="666">
<figcaption>Mangrove planting with elementary school students from Soligi Village.</figcaption>
</figure>
Aldico Satria Ganesa, Marine Environmental Monitoring Foreman at Harita Nickel, said newly planted mangroves require continuous care during their early stages of growth.
"Young mangroves are still vulnerable to waves, currents, and floating debris. We will continue monitoring their growth and replace any seedlings when necessary. As the mangroves mature, they will provide long-term protection for Soligi's coastline and deliver lasting benefits for the surrounding community," he said.
Rusman Baharudin, founder of the Tongke Community and a teacher at SMP Negeri 39 South Halmahera, believes long-term collaboration is essential to the success of mangrove restoration.
"Coastal erosion is a challenge that cannot be addressed by one group alone. Through our community nursery, we will continue supporting the care of these seedlings until they become a strong natural defence for Soligi's coastline," he said.
The Soligi planting initiative forms part of Harita Nickel's broader mangrove rehabilitation programme, which has been underway since 2021. To date, the company has planted more than 67,000 mangrove seedlings across four locations in South Halmahera Regency, while supporting the entire restoration cycle, from nursery development and planting to ongoing maintenance and monitoring, to promote long-term ecosystem recovery.
The seedlings planted today may still be small, but over time they are expected to grow into thriving mangrove forests that help reduce coastal erosion, restore habitats for marine life, and strengthen the resilience of coastal communities. Through collaboration between local communities, government, academia, and the private sector, Soligi is laying the foundations for a more resilient coastal future.

Restoring Mangroves, Strengthening Soligi’s Coastal Resilience

No two waves arrive the same way. One day the sea is calm; the next, stronger currents reshape the shoreline. Sediment shifts, coastlines evolve, and estuaries continuously respond to nature's rhythms. Along the coast of Obi Island, such changes are not exceptions—they are part of everyday life.
That is why protecting the coastline is never a one-off undertaking. It requires continuous monitoring, evaluation and improvement to keep pace with an environment that is constantly changing.
This adaptive environmental management approach underpins Harita Nickel's enhancement of the breakwater system along the Kawasi coastline in 2026. Rather than starting from scratch, the project builds on structures constructed in 2022–2023, refining their design based on years of environmental monitoring and evaluation.
A breakwater is designed to dissipate wave energy before it reaches the shoreline. In Kawasi, it also forms part of an integrated environmental management system connected to the Todoku Canal. The structure helps reduce the direct intrusion of seawater during high tides while supporting water flow management and sediment control in the estuary.
Harita Nickel Environmental Monitoring Supervisor Rifki Surya Nugraha explained that sedimentation in estuarine areas is a natural process. The company's focus, he said, is not to eliminate it, but to manage it in a way that protects both the surrounding environment and community activities.
"The breakwater enables us to carry out routine maintenance of the waterway, ensuring that the navigation route used by local residents remains accessible," Rifki said.
<figure class="image"><img src="https://api.tbpnickel.com/storage/images/blobid0_16.jpg" width="750" height="500">
<figcaption>
<pre id="tw-target-text" class="tw-data-text tw-text-large tw-ta" dir="ltr" tabindex="-1" role="text" data-placeholder="Terjemahan" data-ved="2ahUKEwiS-Myet_aVAxUY2DgGHcgTDuIQ3ewLegQIDRAW" aria-label="Teks terjemahan: Explanation by Rifky Surya Nugraha regarding the function of a breakwater.">Explanation by Rifky Surya Nugraha regarding the function of a breakwater.</pre>
</figcaption>
</figure>
The benefits are also recognised by the local community. Hamja Lewer, a community leader from Kawasi Village, recalled that the Todoku Canal was once too narrow for boats to pass through comfortably, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall. Widening and dredging the canal, together with the construction of the breakwater, are expected to improve water flow while maintaining access for community transportation.
What makes this project noteworthy is that the latest breakwater is the result of an ongoing learning process. Data collected through environmental monitoring of waves, coastal erosion and sedimentation has been used to refine the design, enabling the coastal protection system to better respond to changing natural conditions.
The approach is consistent with the view of Candra Wirawan Arief, a researcher at the Center of Environment and Sustainability Science, Padjadjaran University. According to him, every human activity has the potential to affect the environment. What matters most is not whether risks exist, but how they are monitored, mitigated, evaluated and continuously improved over time.
For Harita Nickel, a breakwater is more than a line of rocks shielding the shore from the sea. It represents an ongoing process of learning—observing how nature changes, assessing what has been achieved, and refining the next course of action.
Because protecting the coastline does not end when construction is completed. On Obi Island, every wave offers a new lesson, and with each lesson comes another opportunity to strengthen the protection of its coastal environment.

Learning from the Waves: Strengthening Kawasi's Coastline

The warehouse at PT Halmahera Persada Lygend (HPL) and PT Obi Nickel Cobalt (ONC) looked different from its usual layout. Shelves normally filled with operational equipment and materials were rearranged to create an open space in the centre of the warehouse, transforming the area into a competition arena for forklift and hand pallet operators. The event was organised by Harita Nickel as part of its ongoing efforts to strengthen operator competency while reinforcing its occupational health and safety (OHS) culture.
Organised through PT HPL and PT ONC, the competition brought together warehouse operators from both companies. Participants competed in two categories—forklift and hand pallet—through a series of practical simulations designed to assess both their equipment handling skills and their discipline in following safe operating procedures.
Warehouse operations play a critical role in the company's operational value chain. Operators' precision in handling and moving materials not only supports efficient logistics, but also contributes to workplace safety, protects company assets, and helps ensure safe and reliable operations.
The competition was designed to evaluate participants' technical skills alongside their adherence to safety procedures. Before beginning each challenge, participants were required to complete a daily pre-operational inspection of their equipment. They then manoeuvred a forklift or hand pallet while carrying a basin filled with water through a zigzag course marked by traffic cones. The exercise tested operators' ability to control the equipment with precision, with less water spilled indicating greater control and proficiency.
Participants were assessed based on the completion of the pre-operational inspection, speed, precision, and compliance with safety procedures, including sounding the horn at designated points throughout the course.
Syarif Hadi Fatullah, Operational Health and Safety (OHS) Superintendent at PT HPL and one of the competition judges, said the event provided an effective way to directly observe operators' technical competency and discipline in applying safe work practices.
"Forklift and hand pallet operating skills are essential to maintaining workplace safety. There is always room for improvement, particularly in terms of precision and efficiency. We hope this competition encourages all operators to continue sharpening their skills while strengthening their safety awareness in their daily work," said Syarif.
The participants shared the same enthusiasm. Irwan, who won first place in the forklift category, said the competition was both a valuable experience and a timely refresher on the work procedures he applies every day.
"I'm proud to have won the competition. More importantly, it reminded us to consistently follow operating procedures, starting from completing equipment checks before use to maintaining safety throughout every stage of forklift operation," Irwan said.

Harita Nickel Shares ESG Innovations at KAGAMA HSE Forum 2026

In high-energy operations, measured energy management is a key factor in maintaining efficiency and operational reliability, as well as supporting the company’s decarbonisation targets. At Harita Nickel, energy requirements underpin a range of key operational areas, from mining and processing to electricity generation on Obi Island, South Halmahera.&nbsp;
Throughout 2025, Harita Nickel recorded a total energy consumption of 113,191,654 GJ, of which 38,937,906 GJ was generated through the Sustainable Energy Initiative (SEI), comprising 64.7% new energy and 35.3% renewable energy. During the same period, the company also implemented various sustainable energy initiatives, including the use of biodiesel, the development of solar photovoltaic (PV) systems, the utilization of waste heat from the acid plant's processes, the use of electric vehicles within its operational areas, and the use of coal gasification.
On the operational side, more efficient energy use helps reduce costs, minimize waste, and improve visibility into consumption patterns across each work area. From an environmental perspective, well-targeted energy optimization also contributes to reducing carbon emissions from operational activities.
To achieve structured and purposeful energy management, Harita Nickel continues to strengthen its energy governance through the implementation of an Energy Management System (EnMS) based on ISO 50001, as part of the company's Decarbonization Roadmap. Implementation is being carried out in phases.
The EnMS implementation is also part of Harita Nickel’s medium-term targets in its decarbonisation roadmap. The company aims for a 30% reduction in GHG emissions by 2032 through improved energy efficiency, optimization of the energy mix, and wider use of non-fossil energy sources. In practice, this target is measured against a 2024 baseline for existing facilities. For newly built facilities, measurements will be taken once they are operating at full capacity.&nbsp;
"Implementation is being carried out in stages: starting with awareness-building through training sessions, followed by a readiness assessment to establish baselines and targets, and then preparing for continuous improvement across operational areas," said Zahedi Zakaria, ESG Transformation Manager at Harita Nickel.
This initial phase began in 2025 with Harita Nickel conducting a Level 1 Energy Audit covering the mining, smelter, and refinery areas. The audit served as a preliminary assessment ahead of a deeper energy use analysis under the EnMS framework.
EnMS implementation began with mining operations in 2025 and is being expanded in 2026 to include the smelter and power plant. By covering these key operational areas, Harita Nickel is building a clearer picture of energy use and identifying efficiency opportunities at each site.
This momentum continued in May–June 2026, when the company conducted an EnMS Awareness and Gap Assessment Training Program. The one-week training involved participants from across operational functions, including the Production, Power Plant, Maintenance, Health, Safety &amp; Environment (HSE), and Human Resources (HR) departments. The agenda also included an executive briefing for operational leadership to align strategic support for this initiative.
"During the training sessions, participants were introduced to the fundamentals of management systems, relevant regulations, and the requirements of ISO 50001:2018. Beyond building technical knowledge, the training also strengthened cross-functional understanding of how energy management can be integrated into day-to-day operational activities," Zahedi added.
Through this process, the company was able to identify areas of high power consumption, uncover previously unmeasured inefficiencies, and map out energy optimization opportunities.
This approach builds on previous measures, with the company recording a reduction and avoidance of 3,151,013 tCO₂e in emissions throughout 2025 through various measurable energy initiatives.
The outputs from the training and gap assessment will serve as the foundation for setting energy performance targets, developing efficiency action plans, and integrating energy indicators into operational evaluation processes. Through these steps, Harita Nickel continues to build the organization's capacity to manage energy in a more disciplined, measurable, and sustainable manner, as part of its efforts to support more efficient and low-carbon operations.

Building a More Systematic Approach to Energy Management through an EnMS

In observance of World Environment Day (WED) 2026, Harita Nickel through PT Trimegah Bangun Persada Tbk (TBP) once again held an Enviro Talk to discuss the latest issues surrounding the natural environment. Under the theme "Inspired by Nature, For Climate, For Our Future," the discussion was held in a relaxed yet insightful atmosphere.
The event opened with remarks by Younsel Evand Roos, Harita Nickel's Director of Operations. In his address, Younsel stated that, as human beings, it is our shared responsibility to create a healthy and liveable environment. He emphasised that this goal can only be achieved by respecting nature and consistently adhering to the applicable regulations and standard operating procedures.
Following the opening remarks, the main session was led by two internal speakers. The first discussion session was presented by Alam Firdausi, Environmental Superintendent of TBP. Alam presented climate change as one of the biggest issues facing the world today. In Indonesia, this phenomenon is marked by shifts in temperature, changes in rainfall patterns, and rising sea levels.
Alam further explained that the impacts of climate change are far-reaching. “Climate change leads to increasing disaster risks and the emergence of new health threats, to the point of endangering biodiversity as ecosystems change significantly," he explained.
<figure class="image"><img src="https://api.tbpnickel.com/storage/images/blobid0_13.jpg" width="750" height="501">
<figcaption>One of the speakers at EnviroTalk, Alam Firdausi, Environmental Superintendent of Harita Nickel.</figcaption>
</figure>
Therefore, responsible industrial operations are essential. Interestingly, he explained that not all mining activities inherently cause environmental damage. Mining operations that apply sustainability principles must undergo a series of assessments and obtain the necessary environmental approvals in accordance with government regulations
Closing his presentation, Alam encouraged participants to contribute positively to the environment through simple everyday actions, such as sorting waste and applying the principles of Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle (3R). He underscored that while these steps are widely understood, the real challenge lies in consistency. "Sorting waste sounds simple, and many people already know about it. But the key is in our consistency in actually doing it," he said.
Moving into the second session, Dodig Pratama, Mine Reclamation Superintendent of TBP, deepened the discussion by presenting reclamation and revegetation as a concrete and measurable form of mitigation carried out by the company. "Every tree we plant has value. It produces oxygen, absorbs carbon, and its benefits will continue to be felt even by the generations after us," he explained.
In this context, the reclamation and revegetation carried out by the company go beyond simply replanting trees on post-mining land. The primary goal of reclamation is to restore the ecosystem in its entirety. Dodig explained that once the vegetation serving as a food source for wildlife begins to grow, they will gradually return, allowing the ecosystem to re-establish itself over time.
<figure class="image"><img src="https://api.tbpnickel.com/storage/images/blobid1_11.jpg" width="750" height="501">
<figcaption>One of the speakers at EnviroTalk, Dodig Pratama, Environmental Superintendent of Harita Nickel.</figcaption>
</figure>
In closing, he affirmed that care for the environment must not stop at the needs of the current generation. Every step taken today, he said, is a responsibility that will be accounted for by future generations. "We are not leaving life behind for our grandchildren, we are borrowing it from them, and we must return it in the future," he concluded.
On the sidelines of the discussion, Dodig also highlighted several environmental initiatives currently being developed by TBP. One of these is <a href="https://tbpnickel.com/id/kuso-solusi-harita-nickel-ubah-sisa-makanan-jadi-pupuk-organik">KUSO</a>, an innovation in the processing and reuse of organic waste. The program, which initially processed organic waste from two TBP employee canteens, has now been expanded to include three contractor canteens. With this broader coverage, the volume of organic waste being managed has increased significantly. Furthermore, TBP is also finalizing preparations for the implementation of the Post-Mining Plan (RPT), which has become one of its key priorities going forward.
Enviro Talk is one of a series of activities organised by Harita Nickel to mark WED 2026. In addition, the company also organised a beach clean-up, environmental education sessions with schoolchildren from the villages of Soligi and Kawasi, a fun walk, and the planting of hundreds of trees in Kawasi Village. Together, these activities demonstrate how Harita Nickel translates its environmental commitments into concrete actions across its daily operations.

Inspired by Nature, Acting for Our Future with Harita Nickel

Efforts to build a sustainable, community-based waste management system in Kawasi Village have entered a new phase. Coinciding with World Environment Day 2026, the Kawasi Village Government signed a draft Village Regulation (Perdes) on Waste Management to strengthen the sustainability of the Kawasi Berseri (Clean, Healthy, and Self-Reliant) Program, a collaborative initiative between the village administration and Harita Nickel that has been running since 2023.
The signing ceremony took place at the Kawasi New Settlement Community Hall on Friday (June 6) as part of a series of World Environment Day activities organized by Harita Nickel and the local community since June 4. The program featured a coastal clean-up involving employees and residents, waste management education sessions, a neighborhood cleanliness competition, and a tree-planting initiative as a shared commitment to environmental conservation and climate resilience.
Through the Kawasi Berseri Program, Harita Nickel and the Kawasi Village Government have worked together to establish an integrated waste management system involving residents, the village administration, the village-owned enterprise (BUMDes), and local waste management groups. Implemented under Harita Nickel’s Community Development and Empowerment Program, the initiative goes beyond improving environmental cleanliness by encouraging behavioral change, strengthening local institutions, and fostering active community participation in waste management.
<figure class="image align-center"><img src="https://api.tbpnickel.com/storage/images/Media/Liputan/Kabar%20Obi/Lingkungan/image1_4.jpg" alt="" width="700" height="467">
<figcaption>Kawasi and Soligi Villages' children enthusiastically visited the Harita Nickel Environment team’s stand, which educated the impact of plastic waste.</figcaption>
</figure>
Bambang Bakir, Head of Social Welfare Affairs at the Kawasi Village Government, said the draft regulation represents a strategic step toward providing a clear legal framework for waste management while addressing the growing volume and diversity of waste generated in the village.
“This regulation was drafted to respond to the increasing volume and types of waste in Kawasi Village. Its purpose is to ensure that waste management is not merely a one-off activity, but a system jointly implemented by the community, the village government, and BUMDes,” he said.
According to Bambang, the regulation governs waste management in an integrated manner, covering waste reduction at source, sorting, collection, transportation, and processing. It also strengthens the role of BUMDes in delivering waste management services and establishes a service fee mechanism to support long-term operational sustainability.
He added that Harita Nickel’s support through infrastructure provision, mentoring, and education programs has contributed significantly to improving community capacity and awareness in managing waste responsibly.
The impact of these efforts is already being felt by local residents. Wildos Marsan Totononu, head of the PUSPA (Waste Management Center) Group in Kawasi Village, said public awareness of environmental cleanliness has continued to grow as the program progresses.
“The biggest challenge has been changing long-established habits. But now we are seeing significant progress. The environment is cleaner, and more residents are actively involved in keeping the village clean,” he said.
<figure class="image"><img src="https://api.tbpnickel.com/storage/images/Media/Liputan/Kabar%20Obi/Lingkungan/image4_2.jpg" alt="" width="700" height="468">
<figcaption>The success of the Kawasi berseri of programmes requires the participation of all parties, including the residents.</figcaption>
</figure>
Broto Suwarso, Community Development Manager at Harita Nickel, said strengthening the regulatory framework is essential to ensuring that the system established through Kawasi Berseri continues to operate and evolve.
“World Environment Day provides an important opportunity to strengthen public awareness and participation. The signing of this draft regulation is a crucial step toward ensuring that waste management can continue independently and sustainably,” he said.
The Waste Management Regulation is expected to further strengthen the foundation of the Kawasi Berseri Program as a model for community-based waste management in Kawasi Village. Collaboration among residents, the village government, BUMDes, waste management groups, and Harita Nickel remains a key driver in creating a cleaner, healthier, and more livable environment for the entire community.

Village Waste Management Regulation Strengthens Sustainability of Kawasi Berseri Program

The courtyard of the multipurpose hall in the new Kawasi settlement was filled with laughter and excitement that morning. Hundreds of students, from elementary to senior high school levels, from Kawasi and Soligi villages mingled with Harita Nickel employees before setting off together toward the tree-planting site.
Along the roadside, planting holes had already been prepared alongside rows of sea pine and ketapang kencana saplings, as well as piles of KUSO, an organic fertilizer produced from food waste collected from Harita Nickel’s cafeterias. The scene—a blend of generations and professions working side by side—captured the spirit of the grand finale of the World Environment Day 2026 celebration on Obi Island on Saturday (June 6).
Planting hundreds of trees was more than a ceremonial activity. It represented a tangible commitment to safeguarding environmental sustainability through collective action.
Harita Nickel Environmental Superintendent Indra Maizar described the initiative as a form of social investment.
“Involving students is aimed at fostering environmental awareness from an early age,” he said.
A total of 530 saplings were planted as part of the program. The selected species, including sea pine and ketapang kencana, were chosen for their suitability in supporting coastal ecosystems while providing shade and greenery for the surrounding area. The tree-planting effort was also complemented by a series of community-focused activities.

<h2 dir="ltr">From Coastal Cleanups to Village Regulations</h2>
The greening initiative at the heart of the new Kawasi settlement marked the culmination of a broader series of World Environment Day activities.
The celebration began with a coastal cleanup along Kawasi’s shoreline, where employees and residents worked side by side to collect and sort waste scattered across the beach.
“It’s encouraging to see the coastline clean again. With the village regulation in place, people are becoming more aware that waste management is a shared responsibility,” said Wildon Marsan Totonunu Leader of Waste Management Center Kawasi Village who joined the cleanup effort.
To ensure a lasting impact, the collaboration was strengthened through the signing of a draft village regulation on waste management. The regulation is expected to reinforce the sustainability of the Kawasi Berseri (Clean, Healthy and Independent Kawasi) program, a joint initiative between Harita Nickel and the Kawasi Village Administration aimed at promoting sustainable waste management practices.

&nbsp;
<h2 dir="ltr">Young People at the Forefront of Change</h2>
While the village regulation provides a legal foundation, education serves as an investment in the future.
Through the “Torang Jaga Kawasi, Aksi Nyata untuk Obi” (Protecting Kawasi, Real Action for Obi) campaign, hundreds of students participated in environmental education sessions covering topics ranging from waste management and environmental cleanliness to circular economy principles.
Students learned how organic waste can be transformed into KUSO fertilizer and how plastic waste can be processed into liquid fuel through pyrolysis technology.
“I’m happy to be part of this activity. I just learned that food waste can be turned into fertilizer and that used items can have value again if we know how to reuse them,” said Gilang Muhammad, a junior high school student from Soligi Village.
Bambang Bakir, head of community welfare affairs for the Kawasi Village Administration, emphasized the importance of instilling environmental values from an early age.
“A clean environment is not created overnight. Children must become pioneers who encourage their families and communities to care for nature,” he said.
Echoing the sentiment, Harita Nickel Community Development Manager Broto Suwarso said sustainability can only be achieved through a balance between economic growth, environmental stewardship and human development.
“Protecting the environment is a shared responsibility. Simple habits such as sorting waste can create a significant impact when practiced consistently by young people, who will become the future agents of change for Obi,” Broto said.
The 2026 World Environment Day celebration offered a compelling example of how industrial operations and environmental conservation can go hand in hand. Through collaboration, education and concrete action that brings people closer to nature, Harita Nickel and local communities are laying a strong foundation for a greener, healthier and more sustainable future for Obi Island.

Torang Jaga Kawasi: Harita Employees and Local Youth Join Forces to Green Obi

Obi Island, North Maluku – In recent years, Obi Island has drawn significant national and international attention. As a hub for integrated nickel downstream processing, the island is often associated with two contrasting narratives: on one hand, as a driver of economic growth and the global energy transition; on the other, as an industry perceived to have environmental impacts. Amid these competing narratives, the public deserves a comprehensive picture based on verified and up-to-date facts. This article presents findings from independent observations, environmental management data, and transparency measures implemented by Harita Nickel. Perkumpulan Telapak, a non-governmental organization focused on sustainability since 1997, conducted an observation in June 2025 together with a research team from the University of Indonesia (UI). Their assessment recorded an important finding that has rarely received media attention: “Overall, the waters of Kawasi remain in good condition. Telapak did not find any changes in water quality or ecological damage caused by the company’s activities.” (<a href="https://www.telapak.org/ringkasan-awal-laporan-observasi-lapangan-praktik-pertambangan-berkelanjutan-harita-nickel/">Telapak Environmental Observation Report, June 2025</a>) The report also highlighted that fishermen around Kawasi and Soligi continue to operate normally and maintain productive catches. The community’s routine fishing activities provide tangible evidence that local water quality continues to support marine ecosystems.

<h2 dir="ltr">Water Management Facts</h2>
One of the most frequently discussed issues is mine water management. Since the beginning of its operations, Harita Nickel has established an integrated water management system designed to ensure that water returned to the environment meets applicable quality standards.
The company currently operates 58 settling ponds that function to clarify runoff water (rainwater that passes through mining areas) before it is discharged into the environment. Two major ponds Tuguraci (43 hectares with 11 compartments) and Bunaken (20 hectares with 5 compartments)—are capable of storing millions of cubic meters of water. At these facilities, water is treated using coagulant and flocculant technologies to ensure suspended particles settle effectively.
What distinguishes Harita Nickel’s approach is its strict separation principle: no drainage channels, sedimentation ponds, or discharge systems intersect with natural drinking water sources or rivers. This principle reflects the company’s commitment to ensuring that mining infrastructure does not interfere with community water resources.
To ensure transparency, Harita Nickel is also connected to SPARING (Continuous and Online Industrial Wastewater Quality Monitoring System). This system is directly integrated with Indonesia’s Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK). Water quality data at final discharge outlets can be monitored by regulators in real time, ensuring compliance with environmental standards.
&nbsp;
“Transparency is not merely about publishing annual reports. Transparency means providing regulators with real-time access to monitor operational aspects of water management. That is exactly what we do through SPARING.”
(Tonny Gultom, HSE Director, Harita Nickel)

<h2 dir="ltr">Tailings Management Facts</h2>
When discussing water and environmental management, one question frequently arises: Does Harita dispose of tailings into the ocean? This allegation is often raised. What are the facts? Harita Nickel does not practice Deep Sea Tailings Placement (DSTP). All tailings are managed on land through a Dry Stack Tailings Facility (DSTF), which utilizes multiple protective layers, including geomembranes and vertical drainage systems, to minimize environmental risks.
In its High Pressure Acid Leach (HPAL) process, Harita Nickel applies a proprietary methodology developed with technical partners to reduce the formation of hexavalent chromium (Cr6+). This innovation was first disclosed in the company’s 2023 Sustainability Report and continues to be refined. Third-party studies have shown that the resulting tailings are non-explosive, non-flammable, non-reactive, non-corrosive, and non-toxic according to applicable LC50 and LD50 standards.
&nbsp;
<h2 dir="ltr">Facts About Fish and Fishermen in Obi</h2>
A healthy environment should provide tangible benefits to local communities. Since 2023, Harita Nickel has regularly organized the Obi Fishing Tournament. In 2025, the event attracted 135 participants and resulted in catches of large fish species such as grouper and snapper, species known to be sensitive to changes in water quality. This serves as an important indicator that the marine ecosystem surrounding the operational area remains productive.
The company also initiated the SUTAN Program (Fishermen Fish Processing Center) in Kawasi and Soligi. The program supports fishermen through cold storage facilities and marketing assistance, enabling direct integration of catches into the company’s supply chain. Throughout 2024, SUTAN fishing groups supplied 28.5 tons of fish, creating a stable economic value chain and supporting long-term social sustainability.
&nbsp;
<h2 dir="ltr">Facts About the New Kawasi Settlement</h2>
The relocation of Kawasi Village residents has often attracted public attention. It is important to understand that this process was government-led and entirely voluntary.
In 2018, Kawasi Village was categorized as an underdeveloped village, frequently affected by flooding, vulnerable to sea-level rise, and exposed to extreme weather events.
Harita Nickel supported the development of a 103-hectare residential area integrated with public facilities, including 24-hour electricity access, elementary and junior high schools, a mosque, a church, community halls, sports facilities, and commercial areas. Productive land surrounding the settlement is supported by agricultural training facilities to strengthen residents’ economic self-sufficiency.
Yunince, one of the first relocated residents, shared a testimony reflecting the tangible impact of the relocation:
“When it rains, the roads are no longer muddy. When it is hot, there is no dust. Here we have electricity and water 24 hours a day. In my old house I didn’t use air conditioning, but here I’ve installed three AC units.”
(Yunince, Resident of New Kawasi)
Another resident, Nur Eneng Rahmat, who once returned to her former home, recognized a significant difference. She explained that her old house was very noisy because it was located near the main road. In the new settlement, she feels much more comfortable. The neighborhood is better organized, interactions with neighbors are more frequent, and religious activities are active. She has also been able to open a small grocery business generating daily revenues of IDR 1–2 million.
On 19 November 2025, Ikbal Hi. Mustafa, Head of the South Halmahera Public Housing and Settlement Agency, officially handed over land certificates to Kawasi residents living in the new settlement, providing legal certainty of land ownership.
&nbsp;
<h2 dir="ltr">Global Standards: IRMA and RMI RMAP</h2>
Harita Nickel’s commitment to going beyond regulatory compliance is being tested through its willingness to undergo audits against global standards. The company became the first mining company in Indonesia to voluntarily undergo an audit under the Initiative for Responsible Mining Assurance (IRMA), the world’s most rigorous responsible mining standard, consisting of more than 400 assessment criteria.
As stated by IRMA Executive Director Aimee Boulanger:
“We are not here to hand out green labels. We are here to change industry expectations.”
The ongoing IRMA audit includes comprehensive assessments of water management, biodiversity, human rights, and community relations. Audit results will be published openly as part of the company’s commitment to transparency.
In addition to IRMA, Harita Nickel is also participating in the Responsible Minerals Initiative – Responsible Minerals Assurance Process (RMI RMAP) to ensure responsible supply chain practices aligned with human rights and transparent governance principles, based on the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, ILO Core Conventions, and OECD Guidelines.
&nbsp;
<h2 dir="ltr">Environmental and Social Investment Facts</h2>
In 2024, Harita Nickel invested significant resources in environmental management and sustainability initiatives. Community programs ranging from women-led cooperatives to local food security initiatives delivered measurable outcomes, achieving an average Social Return on Investment (SROI) of 2.62.
This means that every one rupiah invested generated more than double its value in social benefits. Community satisfaction with these programs averaged 89 out of 100, categorized as “very good.”
&nbsp;
<h2 dir="ltr">Facts About Continuous Improvement</h2>
Harita Nickel is committed to turning every challenge into an opportunity for continuous improvement.
By opening its operations to international audits and independent research conducted by universities such as IPB University, the University of Indonesia, and Khairun University, Harita Nickel demonstrates that its governance practices on Obi Island are grounded in data and verified field assessments—an indication that coastal ecosystems remain relatively well preserved.
The journey toward responsible mining is an ongoing process, and every step forward reflects a commitment to learning, improving, and strengthening performance over time.
