<p style="text-align: justify;">In commemoration of the 2026 National Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Month, Harita Nickel has partnered with communities within its operational area on Obi Island, South Halmahera, to strengthen the culture of safety and health through various concrete actions, ranging from free health check-ups to safety education programs.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">This initiative aligns with the theme of the 2026 National OSH Month, <em>“Building a Professional, Reliable, and Collaborative National OSH Management Ecosystem.”</em> The series of activities was carried out through community service programs involving employees, local residents, and educational institutions as part of efforts to build shared awareness of the importance of safety and health.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">One of the activities took place in Kawasi Village on January 24, 2026. The event began with a healthy walk and group exercise involving Harita Nickel employees and local residents. The activities continued with educational sessions on healthy lifestyles and First Aid (P3K) training for students from elementary to senior high school levels, as well as health examinations for community members.</p>

<p style="text-align: justify;">Harita Nickel’s Technical Support Manager, Dian Kristiyanto, emphasized that occupational safety and health must be built as a collective culture. According to him, the series of community service activities during National OSH Month serves as a platform to encourage the adoption of healthy lifestyles and to strengthen safety culture within the community. “At Harita Nickel, the spirit of OSH is not only implemented in the workplace, but we also bring it into the community as a manifestation of our <em>One Harita, Caring for Each Other</em> commitment,” he said.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">In addition to Kawasi Village, community service activities in commemoration of National OSH Month were also conducted in Tabuji Hamlet, Baru Village, Obi District, through free health check-up services. Dozens of residents enthusiastically visited the health service post, which was staffed by Harita Nickel doctors and medical teams. These health services are not limited to OSH Month, but are routinely carried out through the <em>Doctor Harita Share</em> program.</p>

One of the health service recipients, Yubelina Colling, expressed her appreciation for the free health check-up program organized by the company, as it helps residents become more aware of their health conditions. “I hope the community will become more aware of the importance of monitoring their health and be willing to come for check-ups when activities like this are held again in the future,” she said.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Appreciation was also conveyed by Imel Lumamuly Tuta, a teacher in Kawasi Village. She noted that the community service activities have had a positive impact on both residents and students by increasing knowledge, fostering learning enthusiasm, and encouraging students to be more concerned about health and safety.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Chairman of the 2026 National OSH Month Committee at Harita Nickel, Muhammad Fauzi, explained that in addition to community-based activities, the company also commemorates National OSH Month internally through various competitions, socialization programs, and workplace safety campaigns. “All of these initiatives aim to strengthen the understanding and implementation of OSH across all operational lines,” he explained.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Through continuous collaboration with communities and various stakeholders, Harita Nickel remains committed to supporting the creation of a strong occupational safety and health culture. In alignment with the national theme, “Building a Professional, Reliable, and Collaborative National OHS Management Ecosystem,” Harita Nickel positions OHS not merely as a system, but as an integrated ecosystem embedded in the daily operations of all Insan Harita.</p>
<p dir="ltr">This commitment was reflected in the opening series of BK3N activities held across Harita Nickel’s operational areas on Obi Island, South Halmahera. The opening ceremony marked a unified declaration of commitment involving business units, management, and business partners, emphasizing that safety is a shared responsibility that must be implemented comprehensively and consistently.</p>

<p dir="ltr">Deputy Technical Support of PT Obi Sinar Timur (OST), Amirrudin, stated that the principle of “Satu Harita, Saling Menjaga” extends beyond a tagline and must be internalized as a core value in every work activity. Safety, he noted, transcends organizational structures, functions, and roles, and is the responsibility of every individual as part of a single organization.</p>
<p dir="ltr">“Operational activities inherently involve potential hazards; however, incidents are preventable. Consistent adherence to procedures, compliance with OHS standards, and proactive care through mutual reminders are fundamental to establishing a safe working environment,” he explained.</p>
<p dir="ltr">He further emphasized that while management remains committed to providing adequate safety systems, procedures, training, and facilities, effective implementation is contingent upon the active participation and accountability of all Insan Harita.</p>

<p dir="ltr">In line with this, Primus Priyanto, Head of Mining Engineering at PT Trimegah Bangun Persada Tbk, underscored the importance of developing a professional, reliable, and collaborative OHS ecosystem. He noted that professionalism in OHS begins with a thorough understanding of occupational risks and is reinforced through consistent application of risk controls and strict compliance with work procedures.</p>
<p dir="ltr">“Professional conduct is demonstrated through consistency in adhering to work procedures and applying risk control measures,” Primus stated.</p>
<p dir="ltr">He added that the reliability of the OHS system must be continuously strengthened through the enhancement of human resource competencies and the reinforcement of the Mining Safety Management System (SMKP). This includes strengthening safety leadership, developing supervisory capabilities, and cultivating a constructive feedback culture that addresses unsafe actions or conditions as a form of care rather than blame.</p>
<p dir="ltr">“Feedback and corrective reminders should be viewed as an expression of concern for collective safety,” he emphasized.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Furthermore, Primus highlighted collaboration as a critical enabler of an effective OHS ecosystem. Cross-departmental involvement in setting OHS objectives, targets, and programs, supported by regular joint evaluations, is essential to ensure alignment and sustainability of OHS implementation across all operational areas.</p>

Satu Harita, Saling Menjaga: Harita Nickel Reinforces Its OHS Ecosystem

<p dir="ltr">Harita Nickel collaborated with the Kawasi Village Government to facilitate the formation of a Village Disaster Preparedness Team (TSBD). This initiative began with disaster preparedness training and simulations involving 51 residents in the New Settlement of Kawasi Village on Friday, December 19, 2025.</p>
<p dir="ltr">This activity was led by the South Halmahera Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD). It involved multi-stakeholder collaboration, ranging from the Oesman Sadik Meteorological Station, the Ternate Search and Rescue Office, the Auxiliary Health Center, to the Village Maternity Clinic. This cross-sector collaboration strengthens integrated and responsive disaster risk mitigation.</p>

<p dir="ltr">Preparedness is a strategic necessity for Kawasi Village, located in a coastal area with potential for earthquakes and high rainfall intensity. Based on the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) monitoring, peak rainfall on Obi Island occurs in June, which has the potential to increase the risk of natural disasters. Therefore, 43 adults and 8 children participating in the training were provided with materials on risk identification, evacuation simulations, and strengthening coordination during emergencies.</p>
<p dir="ltr">The Head of the Welfare Section of Kawasi Village Government, Bambang Bakir, emphasized the importance of establishing the TSBD as a concrete step to improve community preparedness. "This training is important so that the community is ready to face the impacts of weather changes and potential natural disasters in Kawasi Village. The establishment of the Village Disaster Preparedness Team strengthens the role of residents as the main actors in preparedness," he said.</p>
<p dir="ltr">The Coordinator of Observation and Information at the Oesman Sadik South Halmahera Meteorological Station, Yusran Titdoy, added that preparedness must be based on data. "Disaster preparedness must be supported by accurate weather information. This year, the peak rainfall on Obi Island occurred in June. The BMKG is strengthening its monitoring so that the community can obtain early information on the potential impact of the weather," he explained.</p>
<p dir="ltr">This initiative is also in line with the spirit of Satu Harita, Saling Menjaga (One Harita, Looking After Each Other), and the Community Empowerment Program (PPM). Assistant Vice President of Site Corporate Communications at Harita Nickel, Joseph Sinaga, emphasized that the resilience of the community is the foundation of shared sustainability.</p>

Through an effective management system, potential hazards can be controlled — which is why OHS plays a crucial role in mining operations.</p>

<p dir="ltr">As Indonesia's nickel industry grows stronger and downstreaming gains momentum, the need to develop and improve nickel smelter operating standards continues to increase. Harita Nickel, as an integrated nickel mining and processing company, emphasizes that national industrial growth must be accompanied by increasingly holistic occupational safety standards to ensure sustainable downstreaming.&nbsp;</p>
<p dir="ltr">This message was conveyed by Supriyanto Suwarno, Harita Nickel’s Operational Health and Safety (OHS) &amp; Management System Manager, during an exclusive discussion among nickel industry stakeholders held by the Indonesian Nickel Industry Forum (FINI) together with DSS Sustainable Solutions (dss+).</p>
<p dir="ltr">Through his presentation at the event titled "Transforming Indonesia's Smelting Industry," Supriyanto explained that the measures implemented by Harita Nickel to strengthen safety standards at the company's smelter refer to applicable regulations and reinforce a risk-based approach at the operational level.</p>
<p dir="ltr">"We implement a safety system that not only focuses on compliance, but also on a risk-based approach and strengthening the overall process. With increasingly complex smelter technology, safety must be managed in a measurable and comprehensive manner," he explained.</p>
<p dir="ltr">He added that safety reinforcement is built based on an integrated cross-functional OHS framework within the organization and involves stakeholders. Harita Nickel's OHS program covers three main aspects, namely operational activities, community, and stakeholders.</p>
<p dir="ltr">"The scope of our OHS program not only covers risk control in operational areas, but also the health and safety of the surrounding community, emergency management, and collaboration with stakeholders to maintain safety standards throughout the company's ecosystem," said Supriyanto.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Supriyanto concluded his presentation by emphasizing that the success of the smelter industry in Indonesia is highly dependent on strong partnerships and shared commitment among industry players, the government, industry associations, academics, the community, and global partners.&nbsp;</p>
<p dir="ltr">"Going forward, synergy with all stakeholders will be key in developing a well-standardized OHS framework. This begins with openness to knowledge sharing, strengthening safety regulations, and building local competencies so that Indonesia's smelter industry can grow with higher standards that are relevant to global needs," he concluded.</p>

<div style="text-align: justify;">As different narratives continue to unfold, it is crucial to examine the state of Obi’s marine environment in its entirety. This article aims to provide a brief summary of the island’s ecological landscape, local communities, and environmental management, guided by routine monitoring, operational data, and the social dynamics observed on the ground.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">Marine restoration has attracted significant focus as one of the key initiatives in environmental conservation. In several parts of Obi Island waters, hollow cube structures known as reef cubes have been deployed on the seafloor to help restore the ecosystem.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">Independent monitoring has recorded the following developments:</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">• 109 species of coral reef fish from 22 families have been sighted within the restoration zone.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">• Coral growth rates between 0.93 and 6.64 cm over a two-year span.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">• The reef cubes have transformed into new habitat for species ranging from juvenile fish to adult groupers.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">The restoration is not intended to substitute natural processes; it is implemented incrementally with a measured approach to support ecological recovery.</div>

The activities carried out at the Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) facility involved the Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) team of PT HJF as the party responsible for managing domestic wastewater. After that, we contacted the wastewater treatment plant operator to immediately install a pump to help the air flow into the water (venturi pump) and repair the blower system," he said.</p>
<p dir="ltr">After corrective action was taken, the team conducted another test. The results showed that the DO value was back above the quality standard. Giovanni emphasized the importance of periodic exercises like this. "Preventive measures such as this ensure that the water discharged from the WWTP always meets quality standards before flowing into water bodies. In addition to preventing potential negative environmental impacts, this activity also educates the team on the importance of maintaining water quality," he added.</p>

If not managed properly, the waste can cause odors, produce methane gas, and has the potential to contaminate the soil and water around the operational area.</p>
<p dir="ltr" style="text-align: justify;">In response to this challenge, Harita Nickel developed KUSO (Kelola Ulang Sampah Organik or Organic Waste Management), an initiative by PT Trimegah Bangun Persada Tbk, aimed at transforming food waste into organic fertilizer as part of the implementation of circular economy principles on Obi Island.</p>

The facility itself was chosen in line with the theme of the puppet (wayang) show, where "Cakra" symbolizes protection and balance. <p dir="ltr" style="text-align: justify;">As of November 2025, the CAKRA compost house has collected 7.4 tons of organic waste. Approximately 60% has been turned into around 4.4 tons of solid compost, while the liquid fertilizer produced ranges from 370 to 741 liters. All of these organic products are used for the maintenance of green spaces, nurseries, and reclamation in the company's operating areas.</p>
