South Halmahera, October 22, 2025 — Harita Nickel reaffirms its commitment to sustainable development by supporting the agricultural sector on Obi Island, South Halmahera Regency. Through the SENTANI program (Obi Food Security Center), the company continues to promote food resilience and improve the economic welfare of communities within its operational area.

To support this initiative, Harita Nickel collaborated with the Obi Subdistrict Leadership Coordination Forum (Forkopimcam), the Obi Agricultural Extension Center (BPP), Brimob Company 3 Battalion C, and the Buton Village Government to carry out a joint rice planting activity across 10.5 hectares of farmland in Buton Village, Obi District. The activity, which involved two farmer groups under the company’s guidance, symbolizes the synergy between the private sector, government, and local communities in strengthening regional food security.

Harita Nickel’s Community Affairs General Manager, Dindin Makinudin, explained that SENTANI is part of the company’s Community Development and Empowerment Program (PPM), designed as a center for sustainable agricultural development. The program provides cultivation guidance, infrastructure and facility support, as well as market access for local farmers.

“We hope SENTANI can serve as a model for sustainable agriculture that delivers tangible benefits to the community. Harita Nickel will continue to accompany farmers so that their results can contribute directly to regional economic growth,” said Dindin.

He added that Harita Nickel’s commitment to community empowerment also extends to other sectors such as education, health, infrastructure, and socio-cultural development.

“We want the people of Obi to be resilient not only in food security, but also ready to seize economic opportunities in various sectors,” he added.

The Obi Subdistrict Government expressed its appreciation for Harita Nickel’s initiative, noting its broad social and economic impact.

“SENTANI strengthens the spirit of collaboration and cross-sector cooperation. It is a concrete example of synergy between the company, the government, and the community,” said Ahmad Siombiwi, a representative of the Obi Subdistrict Government.

Meanwhile, Anwar La Jumani, Head of the Batu Putih Farmers Group, shared the tangible benefits of the SENTANI program. The company’s support includes the provision of seeds, fertilizers, plowing machines, and training.

“Since Harita Nickel began assisting us, farmers’ enthusiasm has increased because we feel supported and guided,” he said.

The SENTANI program currently involves 30 active members, consisting of farmer groups, the village-owned enterprise (BUMDes), and the Buton Village Government. Previously, Harita Nickel’s assisted farmers received the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and Sustainable Village Development (PDB) Awards 2024 from the Ministry of Villages, Development of Disadvantaged Regions, and Transmigration (Kemendes PDT) and the Indonesian Social Sustainability Forum (ISSF) for their contribution to strengthening village development through BUMDes-based initiatives.

In addition to SENTANI, Harita Nickel has implemented several other agricultural empowerment programs, including Salam Kawasi as an integrated agricultural learning center in Kawasi Village, Kabar Mapan in Baru Village, Impresif in Jikatamo Village, and Obi Sehati in South Obi District.

Through these initiatives, Harita Nickel demonstrates that industrial growth can go hand in hand with improving community welfare. Support for food security remains an essential part of the company’s commitment to fostering inclusive and sustainable economic growth on Obi Island.

Harita Nickel’s commitment to ensuring employee health and safety goes beyond systems and facilities—it is embodied by the medical professionals who serve with empathy. One of them is Christian Mamuaya, Medical Supervisor at Harita Nickel Obi Clinic (KHNO), who instills compassion and humanity in every aspect of healthcare delivery.

Since joining the company in 2020, the Manado-born professional has worked to provide healthcare services that are not only swift and responsive but also empathetic toward every individual he cares for.

When Christian first arrived at Site Obi, the company clinic was modest, consisting of only five rooms and a handful of medical staff. Today, KHNO has grown into a much more comprehensive health facility with more than 80 medical personnel, multiple treatment rooms, and various supporting amenities.

However, for Christian, progress is not measured merely by physical expansion but by the quality of relationships between medical staff and patients. “What matters most isn’t just the facilities—it’s how we treat those who come to us for help,” he said.

Christian firmly believes that empathy lies at the heart of healthcare. He vividly recalls one experience that reshaped his perspective as a medical professional—when he treated a foreign worker struggling with depression during the pandemic. The patient had withdrawn completely, refusing to interact or even eat.

“The solution wasn’t medication—it was empathy. I brought him some red sticky rice porridge and simply talked with him. From there, he started to open up and accept help,” he recalled.

For Christian, moments like these affirm that empathy can be the most fundamental form of healing. “Sometimes, people don’t need a complex diagnosis—they just need to be heard. And that alone can make them feel better,” he added.

This belief is what Christian continuously imparts to his team at KHNO: that every medical action must be accompanied by genuine care. Over time, he has strengthened this culture of empathetic service through regular training and daily practice, ensuring that every medical professional understands the importance of compassionate communication—especially when dealing with patients under physical or emotional stress.

Beyond the clinic, Christian also encourages all employees across work areas to be prepared for emergencies through First Aid Training and regular Health Talk programs. To him, occupational safety and health are not just procedures, but a shared responsibility rooted in mutual care.

At the same time, he has built an efficient clinic management system to ensure that promotive, preventive, and curative health services are delivered consistently and sustainably. His dedication earned him the Best Employee 2022 award from PT Halmahera Persada Lygend (HPL).

“The key isn’t just me—it’s teamwork. Without it, none of this would be possible,” he said.

For Christian, awards are not the ultimate goal. His greatest achievement is seeing patients recover, employees feel safe, and everyone confident that there will always be medical staff ready to help them wholeheartedly.[]

Christian Mamuaya: Delivering Healthcare with Empathy

Harita Nickel reaffirms its commitment to decarbonization and sustainable energy transition through its participation in the International Bangkok Climate Action Week (BKKCAW) 2025, held on September 28–29 in Bangkok. This international forum, themed “Renewable Energy and Mining Synergies in Indonesia,” brings together industry players, academics, and stakeholders to discuss the application of renewable energy and the challenges of decarbonization in the mining world.

Zahedi Zakaria, Harita Nickel's ESG Transformation Manager, presented Harita Nickel's concrete steps in its decarbonization efforts within its operational areas and the challenges involved.

"We operate on Obi Island, South Halmahera, about 200 km from the national power source, far from the energy hub, but we remain committed to consistently applying decarbonization principles. The challenges are great, but that's where innovation and collaboration come in," he said.

Various decarbonization efforts have been implemented by Harita Nickel, ranging from the construction of coal dome facilities to reduce dust, the installation of solar panels in office areas and worker dormitories, to the use of used cooking oil as an alternative fuel.

"Harita Nickel continues to develop decarbonization potential. Working with researchers and the government to support decarbonization targets, both at the operational level and at the national level," Zahedi added.

In addition to representatives from Harita Nickel, this discussion panel also featured Dr. Adji Kawigraha from BRIN, Fahmi Islami from Mandala Consulting, Dr. Muyi Yang from Ember Energy, and Dr. Rachel Zhou from Reach Advisory. The experts shared their insights on the application of renewable energy and the synergy among the mining sector in Indonesia.

Harita Nickel's participation in BKKCAW 2025 emphasizes the company's active role in supporting the global energy transition. Through strategic collaboration with all stakeholders, Harita Nickel is committed to continuing to develop sustainable solutions and strengthening its contribution to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in the areas of clean energy and climate action.

Harita Nickel Emphasizes Decarbonization and Renewable Energy in Bangkok Climate Action Week 2025

A recent field visit by Perkumpulan Telapak, a non-governmental organization focused on environmental and social governance, together with a team of academics from Khairun University (Unkhair) Ternate, has confirmed that the marine ecosystem surrounding Harita Nickel’s operational area on Obi Island remains well-preserved and in good condition.

The joint team conducted observations at several points, including one located approximately 500 meters from the shoreline and another about five kilometers offshore. The results revealed clear seawater conditions, with artificial reefs developed from processed nickel slag showing natural coral growth.

According to Dickson Aritonang, Vice Chairman of Perkumpulan Telapak, the clarity of the surrounding waters reflects Harita Nickel’s strong environmental management performance.

“The water clarity is remarkable. Even at a depth of four to five meters, we could clearly see the artificial reefs developed by Harita Nickel already covered with naturally grown corals,” said Dickson, adding that the nickel slag-based reefs showed no signs of disrupting the surrounding marine ecosystem.

Dickson also observed the wastewater management infrastructure on land. He mentioned two main sediment ponds he observed, namely the Bunaken and Tuguraci ponds, covering approximately 20 and 40 hectares, respectively. Both are equipped with a Wastewater Treatment Plant (IPAL) and SPARING, a water quality monitoring tool directly connected to the Ministry of Environment.

"If the water quality isn't up to standard, the device will immediately send data to the Ministry. There's no grey area there," he explained. He assessed that the drainage and sedimentation system for mine runoff and wastewater at Harita Nickel demonstrates a solid oversight structure.

While acknowledging that mining activities have an impact, he emphasized the importance of appreciating the recovery measures. "Harita Nickel must remain open to independent evaluation. Because sustainability is not just about business performance, but also about social and environmental responsibility."

The findings of Dickson and the Telapak team align with the observations of the Unkhair academic team led directly by Prof. Dr. M. Janib Achmad, S.Pi., M.Sc. He also observed that Harita Nickel's operational activities are carried out with socially, economically, and environmentally responsible principles. "Observation results show that all the physical parameters of seawater we monitored meet quality standards. This indicates that the ecological pattern in the waters is maintained," he said.

Prof. Janib stressed the importance of using technology and implementing approaches oriented towards sustainable development. "These principles must continue to be upheld, so that the benefits truly reach the wider community, not just the industrial sector," he asserted.

Despite coming from different backgrounds, both Dickson Aritonang and Prof. Janib voiced the same common thread: environmental protection must be carried out with firmness, transparency, and oversight. And if this consistency is maintained, it is not impossible that what Harita Nickel is building on Obi Island today will become an important reference for more sustainable mining governance in the future.

Telapak NGO and Unkhair Academics Confirm the Waters Around Harita Nickel Remain Well-Preserved

Did you know? In 2024, Indonesia produced approximately 33.7 million tons of waste from 311 regencies/cities. Tragically, more than 40% of this waste is not managed properly. This situation is a wake-up call for us all. By following the principles of a more circular economy, we can begin to find solutions.

But what exactly does circularity mean in this context? What are its benefits? And how can we apply these approaches in our daily lives?

What is the Definition of a Circular Economy?

Circular economies follow a production and consumption model that aims to maintain the maximum value of products and materials for as long as possible through sharing, reusing, repairing, rejuvenating, and recycling the products and materials we use. Simply put, a circular economy encourages us to avoid wasteful patterns and shift to more resource-efficient ones.

This model is often summarized by the 3R principle:

· Reduce: Lessening the amount of waste created from the start.

· Reuse: Reusing items that are still in good condition by repairing or rejuvenating them.

· Recycle: Recycling items into new products with different functions

Circular vs. Linear Economies

A circular economy offers an alternative to the linear economic model we're more familiar with: Take, make, use, and dispose. In a linear economy, products are designed for limited use, encouraging consumers to continually purchase new ones.

By contrast, the circular economy seeks to break this wasteful cycle by creating a more sustainable system.

Why Does it Matter?

1. Protecting the Environment

By reusing and recycling, we can use natural resources more responsibly and reduce greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to the climate crisis.

2. Encouraging Economic Efficiency

Implementing the 3R principle also means we don't have to constantly buy new items. This is not only more economical but also opens up new business opportunities.

Circular Economy in Action at Harita Nickel

So what about at Harita Nickel? Here, the circular economy isn’t just a concept, but real-life practice that is implemented on a daily basis. We continue innovating on Obi Island, to make our operations more environmentally friendly and efficient.

Here are some of the initiatives we've implemented so far:

1. Plastic Waste Reduction

We initiated the #AwalBaikDariObi movement in 2024 as a first step to reduce the use of single-use plastics on site. This movement was fully supported by management through the signing of a joint commitment, which became an official company policy.

2. Nickel Slag Utilization

Nickel slag, a byproduct of the processing of saprolite ore into ferronickel, is usually considered waste. However, at Harita Nickel, slag is utilized optimally. With its sand-like texture, this slag is reused for various construction needs, from dormitories, offices, and to developing road infrastructure within the operational area.

3. Used Cooking Oil Utilization

We also utilize used cooking oil from employee consumption as an alternative fuel to coal in the ferronickel smelter. The result? This process is capable of generating 1,545 GJ of energy while preventing more than 1,419 tons of greenhouse gas emissions (CO₂ equivalent). A simple step, with a big impact.

The circular economy isn't just a future concept—it's a necessity today. By implementing it, we can live more sustainably, economically, and environmentally consciously. And most importantly: Every small step, like the ones we're taking at Harita Nickel, has the potential to make a huge difference!

Circular Economy: Definition, Benefits, and Examples of Application

As a home for marine biodiversity, coral reefs are an important part of the ecosystem around Obi Island, South Halmahera. Recognizing this, Harita Nickel presents the reefcube innovation, an artificial, modular-shaped coral reef made from nickel processing byproducts in the form of fly ash and nickel slag.

Interestingly, despite being made from nickel processing by-products, nickel slag is considered non-B3 waste or non-hazardous and toxic material. Based on characteristic tests, this material is not toxic, making it safe to use in the sea. Instead, the minerals in it support the growth of corals and marine life.

Multi-year study by Harita Nickel’s Environment Team published in the DEPIK journal from Syiah Kuala University Aceh with the title "Coral Recruitment Enhancement in Fish Shelter Media Composed of Fly Ash and Nickel Slag on Obi Island, South Halmahera", shows that reefcube is effective for coral recruitment process, which is the process of coral larvae (planula) attaching to a surface and grows into a new colony.

Windy Prayogo, Harita Nickel’s Environmental Marine Compliance Manager, explained that they have produced reefcubes since 2020, deployed 1,696 units, and continue to monitor their effectiveness. “We conduct regular monitoring to record the development of the reefcubes that we have placed, including natural coral growth,” he explained.

The results of a two-year observation showed that coral growth in reefcubes reached 2.4–12.9 centimeters, particularly in the genera Isopora and Pocillopora. Beyond coral growth, the reefcube also successfully attracted 128 species of reef fish and other marine animals, turning it into a lively artificial ecosystem.

The result of this study also shows that the reefcube produced with fly ash and nickel slag provides a strong foundation for the successful coral recruitment process, creating new habitats for marine biodiversity on Obi Island. When responsibly processed, the byproducts from nickel processing can positively impact the marine environment of Obi.

Nickel slag used as the main material for reefcube, Harita Nickel’s artificial coral reef innovation in the waters of Obi Island.

"Reefcube has proven to be effective as a coral recruitment medium because it is made from fly ash and nickel slag, which are rich in calcium, magnesium, and silica. When submerged, these minerals create ideal conditions for coral larvae to attach and grow," said Prasari Riski Hutami, Marine Monitoring Team Diver, Harita Nickel Environment Department.

More than a technical solution, the reefcube demonstrates that mining practices can work in synergy with marine conservation efforts. Nickel slag no longer ends up as waste material, but takes on a new role in supporting marine biodiversity, particularly on Obi Island. This initiative shows that nickel slag, when processed wisely, can become a new foundation for aquatic biodiversity. A testament to Harita Nickel’s commitment to sustainability.

Harita Nickel Boosts Coral Growth with Reefcube Made from Nickel Slag

As part of its long-term commitment to empowering communities around its operational areas, Harita Nickel has officially launched the Mechanic Talent Pool Program (MTPP), an initiative designed to equip local youth with technical skills and enhance their competitiveness in the mining industry. The program is organized by PT Trimegah Bangun Persada Tbk (TBP) in collaboration with PT Gane Permai Sentosa (GPS) and officially commenced on October 5, 2025.

A total of 12 local youths, mostly recent high school graduates from surrounding villages such as Soligi, enthusiastically joined the inaugural batch.
Younsel Evand Roos, Operations Director of PT TBP Tbk, explained that the MTPP was created to address the company’s growing need for skilled mechanics while also fulfilling its corporate social responsibility to local communities.

“We aim to prepare local mechanics who are not only technically skilled but also possess strong character. The young people of Obi should become key players in this industry,” Younsel said.

The training, conducted by Harita Nickel’s experienced professionals, applies a learning-by-doing approach. In addition to technical skills, participants receive training in workplace safety and professional responsibility. Upon completion, graduates who meet performance standards will have the opportunity to join Harita Nickel or its industry partners through a formal recruitment process.

One of the participants, Muliyono La Hasima (18) from Soligi Village, expressed his enthusiasm for joining the program.

“I used to help my family with farming. Through this program, I can learn a lot about mechanics and automotive maintenance, and I hope to work at Harita Nickel after graduation,” he said.

Through the Mechanic Talent Pool Program (MTPP), Harita Nickel reaffirms its commitment to building a sustainable future for communities around its operational areas. The program is more than just a skills training initiative, it is a long-term investment to empower local youth to become independent, competent, and actively contribute to regional development.

“We believe that the greatest investment is not only in infrastructure, but in people. Through MTPP, we are committed to developing outstanding local talent who can grow and advance together with the company,” Younsel concluded.

Harita Nickel Develops Local Talent Through Mechanic Talent Pool Program

Harita Nickel has once again launched the Harita Continuous Improvement (HCI) 2025, its annual program designed to foster a culture of innovation and continuous improvement across all employees.

This year, HCI introduces a new category: Risk Mitigation & Process Improvement. This addition complements the existing category of Productivity & Cost Efficiency, responding to the need for ideas that not only enhance efficiency but also strengthen the company’s resilience and work processes.

Rifky Aksara, Business Control Improvement Expert at Harita Nickel, explained: “Continuous improvement is not only about reducing costs, but also about managing risks smartly. With this new category, HCI becomes more inclusive, opening opportunities not only for production and technical departments but also for non-technical teams that contribute to process enhancement.”

The proposal submission period runs from October 1 to November 30, 2025, and is open to all Harita Nickel employees, whether based at sites, the head office, or representative offices.

Proposals should be practical, easily implementable, non-CapEx (not requiring significant capital expenditure), OpEx-based, and must demonstrate measurable benefits.

Each team should consist of three to six members, may involve cross-department collaboration, and can include both local and expatriate employees. Proposals submitted in previous years may be resubmitted, provided they were not selected as winners.

Participants are grouped into four business clusters: PT TBP (including PT GPS), PT HPL (PT ONC, PT DCM), PT HJF (PT KPS, PT OST), and PT MSP. Last year, HCI 2024 recorded more than 100 innovation proposals, reflecting the strong enthusiasm of Harita employees to innovate.

Topan Prasetyo, Business Controller at Harita Nickel, emphasized that the essence of HCI lies not merely in personal recognition or attractive rewards, but in driving the company’s long-term sustainability.

“Our current focus is on changing mindsets and behaviors regarding the importance of continuous improvement, not only at the management level but across all levels of the organization,” Topan stated.

He further expressed his hope for greater participation and higher-quality ideas this year. “The mission of HCI 2025 is to transform together, learn together, and grow together. Through HCI, let us transform, learn, and grow as one,” he concluded.

HCI 2025 Introduces New Category, Strengthening Innovation and Continuous Improvement Culture

Have you ever wondered what happens to land after it’s been mined? Is it just left alone?

Naturally, the answer is no. Mining companies are required to undertake reclamation activities to restore the environment after it's been used. But what exactly is reclamation? Can it really restore nature to its former glory? Let’s take a closer look!

What is Mine Reclamation?

Mine reclamation is an activity that’s done throughout the mining business cycle, in order to organize, restore, and improve the quality of the environment and ecosystem so that it can function properly again.

Reclamation is a mandatory requirement for mining companies, as stipulated in Law Number 3 of 2020 concerning Mineral and Coal Mining (Minerba Law).

In fact, this regulation states that companies are required to submit a reclamation plan, even before they begin their operations!

Objectives of Mine Reclamation

The primary goal of reclaiming former mining sites is to ensure that the land can be used again for its original purpose. More specifically, reclamation has several main objectives:

a. Restore the ecosystem, by replanting suitable vegetation so that the habitats of wildlife affected by mining activities can also be restored;

b. Prevent environmental damage such as erosion, landslides, and pollution; and

c. Support economic sustainability as the former mining land is restored.

The Mine Reclamation Process

1. Planning

Before a mine commences operations, the company is required to develop a 5-year reclamation plan for the mining site. This plan must be approved by the government before a permit is issued.

2. Implementation

Reclamation can generally be divided into three stages:

Land Preparation

Formerly mined lands need to be reshaped and stabilized, for example by creating a safe slope. After that, fertile topsoil–which is collected during mining–is spread to allow plants to grow well.

Finally, infrastructure is put in place to control erosion and sedimentation. Some common methods include drainage, drop structures, sediment ponds, permanent drainage, sediment traps, and the use of cover crops.

Revegetation

This stage begins with planting cover crops. Good cover crops meet several criteria, including ease of planting, rapid growth, dense growth, symbiosis with beneficial bacteria or fungi, abundant biomass production, and rapid decomposition.

Cover crops play a crucial role in successful reclamation because they prevent erosion, enrich the soil, accelerate weathering, and suppress weed growth.

Next is the planting of pioneer plants. Pioneer plants are usually chosen because they grow quickly and adapt quickly to environmental conditions. Some plants often used for this purpose are gamal (Glycine gliricidia), lamtoro (Leucaena lamtoro), sengon laut (Sea falcataria), turi (Turi bean), johar (Johar), etc.

If the pioneer plants grow well, local plants are also planted, to enrich plant biodiversity.

Maintenance

Along with planting, maintenance is carried out in the form of fertilization, replanting, and weeding. In addition, weeds are removed, and diseases affecting the reclaimed plants are treated.

Since before mining operations began, Harita Nickel has been developing a detailed plan to restore the native ecosystem. As of 2024, we have successfully revegetated an area of 231.53 hectares.

In the revegetated area, we are propagating seedlings of local tree species, including nani, bintangur, rain, mersawa, gosale, and cashew. We also regularly maintain the revegetated area.

Moreover, on January 30, 2025, Harita Nickel revegetated and inaugurated the Loji Central Nursery, a modern 2.8-hectare nursery with a capacity of up to 400,000 tree seedlings per year. These seedlings are used to expedite the reclamation process and support ecosystem recovery in areas surrounding the mine.

Harita Nickel is committed to continually reclaiming ex-mining land and monitoring the progress of the reclamation area to ensure it continues to provide a healthy habitat for the flora and fauna of Obi!

Mine Reclamation: What Happens After Mining is Finished?

To mark World Cleanup Day 2025, Harita Nickel employees partnered with the residents of Kawasi Village, Obi District, South Halmahera, in a joint cleanup initiative. Held on Saturday (September 20), the program underscored the company’s commitment to environmental preservation and community collaboration.

Employees from various business units, together with representatives of the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI), the National Police (Polri), and local residents, walked along the main road linking the company’s operational area with Kawasi Village. Along the way, participants collected scattered waste, with a focus on plastic debris.

Ledrik Langkodi, Head of General Affairs at the Kawasi Village Government, emphasized the importance of regular collaboration between the company and the community. “With regular programs like this, community awareness will increase, and participation in maintaining the environment will expand,” he stated.

Local resident Nurja (50), who also joined the activity, expressed appreciation. She noted that the joint effort between employees and the community demonstrated the company’s tangible role in encouraging environmental awareness. “We are also very grateful for the health education and checkups provided for mothers and children. Health is a priceless gift that must be preserved,” she added.

Separately, Harita Nickel’s Community Affairs General Manager, Dindin Makinudin, explained that the cleanup was part of a series of World Cleanup Day programs themed “Towards a Clean Indonesia 2029,” which began on September 10, 2025. Activities included community cleanliness competitions in Kawasi’s old and new settlements, food package distribution, health education and checkups for mothers and children, and concluded with the joint cleanup.
