Harita Nickel is advancing its commitment to renewable energy, with one of its key initiatives being the construction of a rooftop solar power plant (PLTS) on its office facilities and employee accommodations.
Low-emission energy is no longer a choice but a necessity. The world demands concrete steps to reduce carbon emissions, and Indonesia has affirmed its commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2060 or sooner. The industrial sector, including nickel mining and processing, plays a crucial role in this achievement.
Harita Nickel recognizes this responsibility. As an integrated mining and downstream processing company on Obi Island, Harita Nickel sees its role as extending beyond just the production process. Besides its use in stainless steel, the nickel produced here is an essential raw material for electric vehicle batteries, which are the backbone of the future's clean energy.
The energy demand for nickel mining and processing operations is substantial, and historically, it has been largely dependent on coal.

To address this challenge, Harita Nickel has begun developing several solar power plants (PLTS) across various facilities, including at employee dormitories (pilot project, soon to be operational), at the facilities of PT Halmahera Persada Lygend (HPL), PT Obi Nickel Cobalt (ONC), and at the Nickel Sulfate plant, as well as in the HJF area (currently under construction, with the largest capacity in the first phase).
"The utilization of PLTS in the Obi Industrial Area (KIO) is a tangible step to accelerate the energy transition in the mining sector. Besides supporting operational efficiency, this initiative is also in line with global renewable energy trends and our national net-zero emission target," said Amiruddin, Deputy Department Head of Technical Support at PT Obi Sinar Timur (OST), the energy operator in KIO.
Although still in the early stages, the use of these solar panels is expected to have a significant impact by reducing the company's dependence on fossil fuels and simultaneously creating opportunities for future energy efficiency. Harita Nickel aims to gradually achieve an installed capacity of up to 300 MWp.

Tonny Gultom, Director of Health, Safety &amp; Environment (HSE) at Harita Nickel, explained that the development of solar power plants (PLTS) requires a significant investment.
"This investment is certainly not cheap, but it is crucial for low-emission operations," Tonny emphasized.
All of these initiatives are part of Harita Nickel's decarbonization roadmap. The company seeks to demonstrate that business growth and sustainability can go hand-in-hand. For Harita Nickel, the use of PLTS on Obi is not merely a technical step but a strategic foundation for a low-carbon future for the Indonesian nickel industry.

Development of Rooftop Solar Power Plants Strengthens Harita Nickel's Decarbonization Efforts

Ferronickel is a product of saprolite nickel ore processing, which is commonly used as a raw material for making stainless steel. In fact,<a href="https://nickelinstitute.org/en/nickel-applications/"> 65 percent</a> of global nickel production is used for ferronickel, the raw material for stainless steel!
In this article, we’ll take a closer look at one of Harita Nickel's most interesting nickel ore processing products: Ferronickel.
<h2 dir="ltr" style="text-align: justify;">What Is Ferronickel?</h2>
Ferronickel is an alloy of nickel and iron, with a nickel content ranging from 20 to 40 percent.
This material is obtained by melting saprolite nickel ore in a furnace at temperatures reaching 1,500 degrees Celsius.

<h2 dir="ltr" style="text-align: justify;">Ferronickel Manufacturing Process</h2>
Ferronickel is made using pyrometallurgy, a process that uses heat to extract minerals. The technology most commonly used in this process is the Rotary Kiln Electric Furnace (RKEF).
The RKEF process consists of several stages:

<li dir="ltr">Nickel ore separation</li>
</ul>
Nickel ore larger than 2 cm is separated from those smaller than 2 cm.

<li dir="ltr">Drying</li>
</ul>
The nickel ore is then dried using a rotary dryer. Here, the nickel ore is heated to 200-300 degrees Celsius, which reduces the moisture content from 40 to 20 percent.

<li dir="ltr">Calcination</li>
</ul>
To separate impurities from the nickel and iron, the dried ore is then melted in an electric furnace at temperatures reaching 1,600 degrees Celsius.

The molten ferronickel is then cast into ingots and, after drying and cooling, can be packaged and shipped to the steel industry.
<h2 dir="ltr" style="text-align: justify;">Differences Between Ferronickel and Nickel Matte</h2>
In general, ferronickel and nickel matte differ in their nickel content. While ferronickel has a nickel content of 20 to 40 percent, nickel matte has a nickel content of up to 78 percent.
And yet, both ferronickel and nickel matte are made from saprolite nickel ore, and both are processed using the same RKEF technology. So what makes nickel matte's nickel content higher?
Following the calcination process, nickel matte is produced by adding sulfur. Sulfur helps separate the nickel and iron, resulting in a higher nickel content.
<h2 dir="ltr" style="text-align: justify;">The Many Uses of Ferronickel</h2>
Ferronickel is both corrosion- and heat-resistant, while also remaining malleable and easy to process. As a result, ferronickel has a wide range of applications in industry and everyday life, including:

Everyone’s professional journey is unique. Some start with a wealth of experience, while others build their careers from the ground up. Rudianto Sapsuha belongs to the latter group. Beginning his academic life studying Information Technology, he transitioned to a crucial role within Harita Nickel's Fire Emergency Service (FES). This unit serves as the front line for readiness and response to a wide range of emergencies, from fire incidents to first aid.
The shift from the world of computers to life-saving operations was a foreign one for him, but it has since become a significant part of his life. This is where Rudianto's new journey began.
For Rudianto, the first challenge was adaptation. “The most significant initial challenge was adapting. This was my first experience working in an industrial environment,” he recalls. However, it was precisely there that he found learning opportunities he had never imagined.
He states that Harita Nickel is not just a workplace but also a space to hone skills. He has participated in various training programs, from firefighter certification to Water Rescue training with the National SAR Agency in Ternate. These opportunities have not only expanded his knowledge but also strengthened his role as a key figure in corporate safety.
His career has grown through the different training programs facilitated by the company. Rudianto has directly experienced the impact: increased confidence and more open opportunities for continuous development. “The most interesting thing about Harita Nickel is the opportunity to learn and innovate, especially given my background is not from the nickel industry,” he says.
For Rudianto, the key to success at Harita Nickel is simple yet fundamental: continuous learning, prayer, growth, and maintaining professionalism. These are the same values he applies to building camaraderie with his FES team members. “Communication and teamwork are very important. But what makes me most comfortable here is the sense of family,” he states.
Workplace safety is also a non-negotiable aspect of his job. He emphasizes that safety is not just a company priority but a personal principle that allows him to work with peace of mind. “Workplace safety is extremely important. There is no negotiation,” he stresses.
Behind his determination lies a source of constant inspiration: his family, senior colleagues, and supervisors who guide his every step. As a native of North Maluku, he has a message for the younger generation: “Harita Nickel is always open. Especially for us, as sons and daughters of the region, we have priority and a golden opportunity to learn, grow, and build a career here.”

From Information Technology to Emergency Response: Rudianto Sapsuha's Journey at Harita Nickel

Harita Nickel continues to demonstrate its strong commitment to creating a safe and healthy workplace. Beyond prioritizing physical safety, the company also places significant emphasis on employees’ mental well-being.
This commitment was reflected through a Psychological First Aid (PFA) training—also known as Pertolongan Pertama pada Luka Psikologis (P3LP)—facilitated by psychologist and lecturer from Pijar Integra Psikologi, Universitas Padjadjaran (PIP Unpad), Hari Setyowibowo, M.Psi., Ph.D., on September 15–19, 2025, at the Activity Center of PT Halmahera Persada Lygend.
The training equipped participants with essential skills to recognize signs of psychological distress, provide initial support, and maintain both personal and collective mental health in the workplace.
Through interactive sessions, participants explored four key modules. The first helped them understand the characteristics of physically and psychologically healthy individuals. The second provided strategies for managing stress, both independently and with external support. The third focused on building skills to provide initial psychological support to colleagues, while the final module emphasized practical application in daily work routines.

Participants also shared personal experiences and strategies they had used to cope with workplace stress. According to Hari, this indicated a strong level of awareness and initiative among employees. “I saw tremendous enthusiasm. They not only understood the sources of stress but also recognized protective factors that support mental health,” he said.
Hari further noted that this initiative represents a progressive step in occupational safety practices within the mining sector. He emphasized that few mining companies pay attention to psychological safety, and praised Harita Nickel for consistently broadening its focus from physical to mental aspects. “I respect Harita Nickel for taking this step. The hope is that participants will be able to pass on the skills they gained to colleagues in the field,” he added.
Following the training, the program continued with face-to-face counseling sessions from September 19 to October 11, facilitated directly by two psychologists from PIP Unpad. These services were designed for employees requiring additional support, whether through screening results, personal initiative, or supervisor referral.
Harita Nickel OHS Manager, Supriyanto Suwarno, underlined that mental health must be treated with the same level of importance as other aspects of occupational health. “Just as we recognize physical, biological, chemical, or physiological hazards, psychological factors are also critical. The goal is for employees to understand themselves, maintain a safe working condition, coordinate, communicate, and remind one another. This aligns with our tagline, Satu Harita Saling Menjaga,” he explained.
Through this program, Harita Nickel reinforces that its greatest investment is in its people. Strengthening safety behavior extends beyond work regulations to include mental well-being—ultimately supporting productivity and the long-term sustainability of operations.

Harita Nickel has been awarded the Katadata Green Initiatives Award 2025 for its innovative use of used cooking oil as an alternative energy source in its operations. This innovation aligns with the company’s commitment to supporting the green transition and reducing carbon emissions.&nbsp;
The award was presented at the Katadata Sustainability Action for the Future Economy (SAFE) 2025 forum, held in Jakarta on September 10, 2025. SAFE is an annual strategic forum organized by Katadata Indonesia since 2020 to promote the transition toward a sustainable economy in Indonesia.&nbsp;
This year, Harita Nickel was recognized for its pioneering steps in accelerating the energy transition. The company utilizes used cooking oil from its employee canteens as a substitute for coal in its Rotary Kiln Electric Furnace (RKEF) facilities.&nbsp;
RKEF is a method for processing high-grade nickel ore into stainless steel raw material, which involves two stages: a rotary kiln and an electric furnace. The RKEF process is energy-intensive, typically relying on coal or other fossil fuels. By using used cooking oil as a substitute for coal, Harita Nickel has made an effort to reduce its carbon emissions.
This initiative not only reduces the company’s reliance on fossil fuels but also leverages a cleaner, alternative energy source. By integrating renewable energy into the mineral industry, Harita Nickel strengthens Indonesia’s role in the global decarbonization agenda, demonstrating that sustainability can go hand-in-hand with national industrial growth.&nbsp;

"The use of used cooking oil is a tangible proof that the mining industry can transform toward greener energy," Tonny added.
Beyond this, the company also implements circular economy principles, processing waste materials like plastic into alternative fuels and used bottles into biofilter media for wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs).&nbsp;
Based on its 2024 Sustainability Report, Harita Nickel recorded that the company's use of sustainable energy reached 23.8%. Concurrently, through various sustainability initiatives, the company successfully reduced approximately 1.5 million tons of carbon emissions. With these achievements, Harita Nickel proves that sustainability can go hand-in-hand with national industrial growth, while strengthening Indonesia's role in the global decarbonization agenda.

Harita Nickel Recognized with Katadata Green Initiatives Award 2025 for Used Cooking Oil Innovation

PT Halmahera Jaya Feronikel (HJF) hosted the Street Food Night Market on September 12–13, 2025, at the employee housing area. The event was designed to provide employees with a vibrant culinary experience while supporting CSR-assisted MSMEs and local business partners.
A wide range of street food was served, from chicken sempol and grilled meatballs to coffee, burgers, and grilled chicken. The food stands were run by catering vendors, minimarket partners, and CSR-supported MSMEs, each bringing their own specialties. This transformed the Street Food Night Market into more than just a culinary event, it became a hub connecting employees with local business partners.
Beyond food, entertainment such as live music and dance enlivened the evening. The sound of guitars and songs accompanied employees relaxing in the open-air area, many of them enjoying the dishes while sharing moments with colleagues. The vibrant atmosphere truly embodied the spirit of the Street Food Night Market.
Positive feedback came from Witri Iskandar, an employee of PT Megah Surya Pertiwi (MSP), one of Harita Nickel’s business units operating on Obi Island. Despite living in a mess located some distance away, he made time to attend with his friends. “The event was exciting, it felt just like a street food festival in the city. It was refreshing to spend time with friends here, and there were so many food options to choose from,” she said.
Witri’s presence underscored that the Street Food Night Market not only fostered togetherness among HJF employees but also attracted enthusiasm from employees of other Harita Nickel units operating at Obi Site.
Christoforus Nanda Rahadian, Industrial Relations &amp; Employee Relations Specialist at PT Halmahera Jaya Feronikel and the program coordinator, explained the main purpose of the event. “We wanted to create a more lively atmosphere at the mess so that employees feel more at home despite working in a remote area,” he said.

Encouraged by the strong enthusiasm, Christo expressed his wish to make the event a regular agenda. “We hope to hold this activity every month to maintain a family-like atmosphere in the employee housing area,” he noted.

The summit, themed "Embedding ESG Across the Battery Value Chain - From Mining to Recycling," brought together industry leaders, academics, and government representatives to discuss the application of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles throughout the battery supply chain.&nbsp;
Representing Harita Nickel in a panel discussion, Zahedi Zakaria, ESG Transformation Manager, highlighted that the success of ESG practices is not solely determined by regulations or technology but also by the active involvement of local communities.
"We ensure that a community grievance mechanism is in place within our operational areas. ESG is a synergy of technological innovation, clear policy, and the voice of the surrounding community,” Zahedi stated.
Zahedi also outlined a number of Harita Nickel's initiatives, ranging from carbon emission monitoring and the implementation of clean production processes to the installation of solar panels in operational areas to reduce the company's carbon footprint. "Our focus is not only on technical targets but also on fostering a harmonious relationship with local communities," he stated.&nbsp;

The panel discussion also featured Dr. Rezal Khairi Ahmad, CEO of Nano Malaysia Berhad, who shared insights on Malaysia's innovation strategy for building an ESG-based economy. From academia, Indra Perdana of Gadjah Mada University (UGM) emphasized the role of education, citing renewable energy research that UGM has been developing since 2015.
In his concluding remarks, Zahedi urged policymakers to establish clear, stable, and measurable national regulations. "The industry requires regulatory certainty to maintain its ESG commitments. Without consistency, it will be difficult for us to achieve global targets," he asserted.

Sunday morning, August 31, 2025, the lush Nirwana mess field burst into a spectacle of vibrant costumes, bold face paint, and fiery enthusiasm. A space that is usually calm transformed into a sea of creativity. Traditional music blended with cheers as PT Trimegah Bangun Persada Tbk (TBP), a business unit of Harita Nickel, kicked off its 4th annual carnival.&nbsp;
Each year, the carnival serves as the grand finale of the Independence Day celebrations. This time, carrying the theme “Eastern Indonesia Shines,” the stage became a powerful symbol of unity—reflecting the life of employees whose diversity is bound by a shared purpose.

 A total of 18 contingents from various departments and contractor partners delivered their best performances. From the stomping rhythms of the Cakalele dance, the graceful flow of Soya-soya, to the adrenaline-pumping bambu gila attraction, employees stepped beyond their roles as workers to proudly embody artists showcasing their ancestral heritage.&nbsp;
Amid the festivity, Younsel Evand Roos, Harita Nickel’s Operations Director, expressed gratitude: “Alhamdulillah, we are still able to gather with such joy. This carnival, rooted in Indonesia’s cultural richness, clearly brings out a stronger sense of togetherness.”&nbsp;
For him, the event carried meaning beyond entertainment. “Each group is challenged to build a solid team, requiring patience, discipline, and commitment. These are the very values we need every day in the workplace,” Younsel emphasized.&nbsp;

 The highlight of the day came with the announcement of winners. The Management Group—an alliance of ten departments ranging from Finance, IT, Geology &amp; Mine Planning, to Business Development—was crowned first place.&nbsp;
Team leader Charles Deni Nelson Auparai reflected on the challenges they faced: “Our spirit was to unite differences. We came from many departments, but also from different regions, tribes, islands, and languages. The challenge was big, but here, we became one,” he said.&nbsp;
According to Charles, their success hinged on humility. “We were not only practicing dance—we were practicing Indonesia. We were living out Bhinneka Tunggal Ika (Unity in Diversity). Hopefully, this spirit of mutual respect will continue to guide us in our daily work.”&nbsp;
The Occupational Health, Safety, and Training (OHST) Department took second place and also secured the overall title, followed by the Human Resource &amp; General Affair (HRGA) Department in third.&nbsp;
The announcement of winners officially closed TBP’s 80th Independence Day celebration series. Yet, while the event concluded, the spirit of unity it fostered will continue to live on—embedded in the company’s daily work culture.

Eastern Indonesia Shines: Unity Spirit Lights Up Harita Nickel Carnival

In the forests of Obi Island, North Maluku, including former mine sites restored by Harita Nickel, Niksen Tindatu now walks with a new purpose. Once he hunted cuscuses and birds; today he protects their freedom in the wild.
A native of Tobelo, Niksen joined Harita Nickel in 2016 as part of the planting and garden maintenance crew in the Human Resources & General Affairs (HRGA) Department of PT Megah Surya Pertiwi, a business unit of Harita Nickel. Two years later, he moved to the Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) Department, a small step that sparked a life-changing transformation.

“Before joining Harita Nickel, I hunted for food to sell, so my family could survive. I didn’t know those animals were protected,” Niksen recalls.

Working with the Environment team changed his perspective. The forest was no longer just a hunting ground, it became a sanctuary for endangered species. The change was not instant; Niksen faced inner struggles every time he released an animal he had caught.

According to Agung Sunardi Munim, HSE Supervisor at Harita Nickel, Niksen’s hunting background turned out to be an asset. “He knows exactly where the animals are. At first, it was hard for him to let them go, but now he is at the forefront of the fight against wildlife poaching,” he said.

Today, Niksen has not only given up hunting but also actively monitors the Obi cuscus (Phalanger rothschildi) and sailfin lizard (Hydrosaurus weberi), two endemic species found only on the island.

His transformation mirrors Harita Nickel’s broader efforts to protect biodiversity, through regular monitoring, habitat restoration, and community education. Since the second quarter of 2025, the conservation team has been delivering wildlife preservation lessons to students in Kawasi and Soligi villages. To date, 90 kindergarten and elementary school students have learned about the animals in their surroundings.

Sephy Noerfahmy, Conservation Superintendent at Harita Nickel, emphasizes the role of education. “Niksen’s story proves that knowledge can turn a hunter into a protector,” she said.

Now, when Niksen enters the forest, he carries a torch and a notebook&mdash;not a rifle. He looks for signs of the very creatures he once pursued, ensuring they remain. For Niksen, within every thick branch and whisper of the night lies Obi Island’s future&mdash;one he hopes to pass on, alive and whole, to generations to come.
